Movement Tips: Getting Started
Movement is vitally important to our survival as living creatures. In the past we have had to move to find and hunt for food. We have had to move to find shelter and safe places to rest. We move to have fun. To enjoy ourselves. The bottom line is we move to live and live to move.
In the modern era movement has been taken for granted. We no longer have to move to feed ourselves. One can literally summon exquisite meals directly to their doorstep with the push of a button. This little fantasy called civilization has lulled us into a complete state of granted comfort and safety. Not to mention who has time to move for fun when we’re all drooling from the mouth thanks to the constant bombardment of social media and technology? We are in a crisis folks. There are no two ways about it. If you’re sitting around waiting for the green light to get your ass up off the couch and get to work, here it is.
To get started all you really need is a floor and your will. If you are interested in purchasing some basic equipment to enhance your physical regiment here are some great options that are affordable and don’t take up too much space.
Tools to Train With:
Yoga Mat
Kettlebells (anything between 10lbs and 50lbs are always handy)
Adjustable Dumbbells (I love powerblocks)
Jump rope
medicine ball
door frame pullup bar.
Feeling overwhelmed already? Don’t worry. I know exercise in general can feel daunting. I am not of the belief that we all have to be olympic powerlifters or bodybuilders to enjoy great physical health and strong bodies. In my opinion if you make it a priority to take a walk everyday you’re doing great work for yourself. If you can get 10,000 steps a day even better. Don’t have time for a long walk everyday? Do some yoga and/or stretching in the morning before getting your day started. The point is there are very simple practices you can incorporate into your daily routine (right now!) that will pay major dividends for your overall well being.
My favorite forms of exercise:
Weightlifting
Yoga
Hiking
Walking
